Sensitive & Impaired Skin
Sensitive and impaired skin is a skin that is more prone to irritation and inflammation. The skin may appear red or flushed, dry, flaky, might feel tight and uncomfortable or itchy.
Genetics, environmental factors like exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperature, wind, and pollution, skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, overuse of skincare products or using the wrong skincare for the skin type, allergy, medications and other medical conditions.
Symptoms of Sensitive & Impaired Skin
- Redness, irritation, inflammation, itching, breakouts or rashes.
- Dryness or dehydration.
- Stinging, burning, or redness upon application of skincare products.
- Visible blood vessels, thin or fragile skin.
- Skin may appear dull, lackluster, or have an uneven texture due to impaired cellular turnover or compromised barrier function.
- Individuals with sensitive or impaired skin may experience sensations of discomfort, such as tingling, burning, or tightness, even in the absence of visible symptoms.
Causes of Sensitive & Impaired Skin
- Genetic predisposition may play a role in determining an individual's skin type and sensitivity.
- The skin barrier serves as a protective barrier against environmental aggressors, irritants, and allergens. When the skin barrier is compromised or weakened, it becomes more susceptible to irritation, inflammation, and sensitivity. Factors such as frequent use of harsh skincare products, overexposure to environmental stressors and certain medical conditions can influence this.
- Exposure to environmental factors such as UV radiation, pollution, harsh weather conditions, allergens and indoor heating or air conditioning can aggravate sensitive skin and contribute to impaired skin barrier function.
- Certain lifestyle habits, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, lack of sleep, and high levels of stress, can negatively impact skin health and contribute to skin sensitivity and impairment.
- Underlying skin conditions, such as eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, rosacea, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and acne, can cause skin sensitivity, inflammation, and impairment.
- Exposure to certain skincare products, cosmetics, fragrances, detergents, and other topical irritants or allergens can trigger skin irritation, allergic reactions, and sensitivity.
- Hormonal fluctuations and medical treatments can cause temporary or long-term skin sensitivity, irritation, and impairment.
