Alopecia & Hair Loss
Alopecia refers to the partial or complete loss of hair from the scalp or other parts of the body where hair typically grows.
Symptoms associated with Alopecia varies from gradual thinning of the hair, small and round bald patches on the scalp, excessive hair shedding or complete baldness.
Symptoms of Alopecia & Hair Loss
- One of the most common signs of hair loss, particularly in androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern or female-pattern baldness), is a gradual thinning of the hair over time.
- Some types of alopecia, such as alopecia areata, present with distinct bald patches or areas of hair loss on the scalp or other parts of the body.
- Excessive shedding of hair during brushing, washing, or styling can be a sign of hair loss. While it's normal to shed some hair each day, an increase in hair fall beyond the typical range may indicate an underlying issue.
- As hair thins or falls out, the scalp may become more visible, particularly in areas where hair loss is most pronounced. This can contribute to a sense of scalp visibility or scalp shine.
- Hair loss may be accompanied by changes in the texture, quality, or appearance of the remaining hair. This can include changes in hair thickness, coarseness, brittleness, or color.
- In some cases of hair loss, particularly those involving inflammation of the hair follicles, individuals may experience scalp irritation, itching, or discomfort.
- In severe cases of alopecia, such as alopecia totalis (complete loss of hair on the scalp) or alopecia universalis (complete loss of hair on the scalp and body), individuals may experience total hair loss.
Causes of Alopecia & Hair Loss
Hair loss can have various causes, ranging from genetics to underlying medical conditions to lifestyle factors.
- Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male-pattern or female-pattern baldness, is the most common cause of hair loss and is primarily genetically determined.
- Genetic, environmental, immune and auto-immune factors also contribute to certain hair loss conditins.
- Physical or emotional stress, illness, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, medications, hormonal changes, or other disruptions to the body's equilibrium.
- Chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer treatment, as well as certain medications, toxins, or environmental exposures that can damage rapidly dividing cells, including hair follicles.
Other factors that can contribute to hair loss include hormonal imbalances (such as thyroid disorders or polycystic ovary syndrome), nutritional deficiencies (such as iron deficiency or vitamin D deficiency), fungal infections of the scalp, trichotillomania (a psychological disorder involving compulsive hair pulling), and certain hairstyles or hair treatments that can damage the hair shaft or follicles.
